ABSTRACT

Smart textiles introduce change as an essential dimension of their presence and, together with the rise of ecological consciousness have brought time as an essential dimension of design. Yet, textile designers are usually not trained to think through temporal concepts and qualities. This paper investigates how time can become a relevant material for textile design practices in the light of ecological challenges. To do so, the paper reflects on on-going practices within the Soft Matter research group. First, the paper draws the outlines of a design-led framework exploring the relationship between textiles and the shaping of more resilient timescapes. Subsequently, it discusses how L’artisanat du cheveu coupé and Les déblais en héritage explore textile processes as means to make new sense of the heritages of modern architecture and hair work craft, respectively. With Clinique Vestimentaire, the paper finally discusses how to shape a new timescape for textile and clothing production.
