ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a pragmatic overview for coach practitioners. It comprises 12 established psychological theories that are relevant when reflecting on coaching practice.

It sets the context with a brief background to transactional analysis (TA) and also to the general theories.

Those from TA that are covered in more detail are Karpman’s Drama Triangle, P-A-C ego state model including the functional version; TA working styles; protection, permission and potency conditions for psychological change and psychological distance. In addition, it includes: fundamental attribution error; contracting; flow; the GROW model; and the supervision triangle incorporating parallel process. There is also a reflection on chemistry, addressing the question: ‘What does good look like?’
