ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I seek to provide a start for a theoretical foundation for TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) career path development. This information will be helpful to those who want to do research and to get answers to important questions about our careers. Until now, many of us have relied on the kindness of friends who encourage us with anecdotal stories to support our efforts to engage in positive, successful, and satisfying careers and career development in TESOL. And the research that we have is on occupational choice, not how careers develop. Here, we look at sequences of occupational positions with the hope of providing TESOL career path development (CPD) with good descriptions of comprehensive theories rather than only what we have until now: anecdotal, segmental ones.
