ABSTRACT

In chapter 2, it was argued that practitioner training in autism awareness is a vital underpinning of effective service provision in inclusive contexts. It was repeatedly stressed that a sound understanding of the condition, and a firm grasp of the main theories of autism, were absolutely pivotal to the endeavour of making sense of the surface behaviour and responses of clients with autism in any workplace context. At the same time, the complexities of using this ‘autism lens’ were squarely acknowledged and explored, especially as they interact with dilemmas associated with inclusive practice.
