ABSTRACT

At the outset of the Reformation, Erasmus was the leading voice for the toleration of religious dissent within the Catholic Church in the interest of concord or church unity. After the death of Michel Servet in 1553, the Basel humanist Sebastian Castellio advanced a more aggressive case for freedom of religion against the Genevan Reformers Jean Calvin and Théodore de Bèze.
