ABSTRACT

Patient and therapist interchange ideas about patient’s lack of self-esteem and inordinate need for prestige in his work. Patient stresses his sensitivity to criticism, and therapist states that patient’s pride interferes with his teaching. He offers himself as a model of a good teacher. When patient attempts to connect his hypersensitivity with his ungratified longing for love from mother and brother, therapist, in an active and forceful manner, confronts patient with his own dynamic formulations of his behavior. Patient reacts by agreeing verbally with these formulations but reveals nonverbally feelings of sadness and anger.
