ABSTRACT

Third parties are another option for managing conflict effectively. Different types of third parties (mediators, arbitrators, and facilitators) are distinguished on the basis of the level of control they exert. Third party approaches are defined in terms of the third party’s concern for the parties aspirations and the third party’s perception of common ground. How third parties affect conflict interaction and the relationship among main parties is discussed. Transformative mediation is advanced as a more positive approach to third party interventions. Strategies and tactics for effective third party interventions are introduced throughout the chapter.
