It was a long time ago, when I was a raw youth. Don’t laugh, I was young once. I wasn’t always such an old fogey. It was in the war, when I was a navigator in Bomber Command. Actually, most of the best stories in Bomber Command cannot be told as the chaps died on the job. We had a high death rate—it must have been only a one in ten chance of survival, and we were all volunteers. Crazy to think about it now. It is hard to think of myself as a brave young warrior now that I am a grandfather.
