ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 explores how time shapes the nature of the relationships that form in shared households. We focus on three aspects of sharing and time: sharers’ understandings of communal living arrangements in relation to their specific age and life stage; the extent to which co-residents shared everyday time together in activities such as domestic chores or leisure activities; and how sharers developed and reinforced shared rituals at the level of ‘the house’. The chapter highlights in particular the carving out and marking of ‘private time’ through carefully managed relational processes of connecting and disconnecting.
