ABSTRACT

Once the patient and therapist have established a case formulation, they have also identi®ed a set of cognitive change goals: namely, the weakening of the existing maladaptive schemas and the strengthening of an alternative, healthy set of schemas. The same change goals can be phrased in mode terms too: cognitive techniques strengthen the way of thinking associated with the Healthy Adult mode, and weaken the ways of thinking that characterize maladaptive coping and parent modes.
