ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author discusses her “top ten ethical pet peeves” in working as an art therapist in psychiatric hospitals, along with the practical solutions she have developed over the years. During a nearly 35-year career in art therapy that includes working as a clinician, a supervisor of interns, a faculty member, and a Board member of both the American Art Therapy Association and the Art Therapy Credentials Board, the author have encountered a wide range of ethical issues. Closely related is the issue of co-leading art therapy groups with staff who don’t know what art therapy is or what is appropriate behavior in art therapy groups. Besides creating a list of “dos and don’ts” for co-leading groups, give prospective co-leaders a copy of Judy Rubin’s article entitled, “Art Therapy. Concepts such as privilege and microaggressions should have been embedded in the art therapy coursework and continuing education.
