ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some aspects of tourism in relation to the beef cattle industry, and the relevant environmental management and poverty amelioration in Botswana as a case study. It also examines briefly the government and economy in Botswana. The chapter discusses tourism industry policy in the country and some aspects of the beef cattle industry. It describes the nature of economic incentives and identifies some of the flows of tourism funds to local people. Economic incentives may be provided by the market with favourable prices or they may be non-market type incentives put in place by governments. The traditional livestock industry has many powerful proponents, who promote their industry and advocate the construction of more fencing to safeguard markets for the industry. Since 1989, Batswana living within the wildlife areas have been granted a form of common property rights to manage and benefit directly from their wildlife.
