ABSTRACT

Abstract This paper describes the experimental program and the construction of the Beddington Trail/Centre Street bridge, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This bridge is the first prestressed concrete highway bridge built in Canada pre-tensioned by carbon fibre reinforced plastic, CFRP, tendons. It is also the first bridge which has utilized a structurally integrated optical sensors system to monitor its behaviour. The twin application of CFRP prestressing reinforcement and optic sensors marks the first step towards the development in the next century.
