ABSTRACT

The main classes of compounds so far investigated are alicyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Compounds are extracted with methanol, followed by evaporation, acid hydrolysis to release conjugated residues, liquid-liquid partitioning, purification using Florisil Sep-Pak and liquid chromatographic analysis. The dried organic phase was concentrated and diluted with iso-octane and subjected to clean-up in a Florisil column. The fraction obtained from fish in Black River consisted primarily of polyaromatic hydrocarbons ranging from 2-methyl-naphthalene to benzo(ghi)perylene, with fairly high levels of polycyclic aromatic sulphur heterocycles. The sensor was inserted into the fish eyeball interstitial sclera fluid, which contains low levels of proteins and correlates well with the glucose levels in the whole blood.
