ABSTRACT

I. INTRODUCTION The toxin group of chemicals consists largely of three subgroups. First, and by far the largest and most important group is the phytotoxins, including mycotoxins, chemicals derived from plant or vegetable sources, and having some potential for toxicity to one or more biological systems. Included in this group are a large number of plants that may or may not be phytotoxic per se and have no value as food sources to the human species, but serve as food for livestock or are poisonous and are admixed with other range plants, the consumption of which results in economic loss through poisoning or deformity. Plants having specific therapeutic value are included under the appropriate group elsewhere in this volume.
