ABSTRACT
This chapter addresses a simple question, namely: of the existing apes, which species is closest genetically to humans? The problem remained unresolved for a period, where tracing the evolutionary history of different genes led to different results. Through advances in genetic science, the problem was resolved and a new understanding of “gene tree versus species tree” relationships emerged.
