ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how to set up in business and function as a freelance music business entity, trading under a professional legal framework. Supplying music products, performances or services can be highly rewarding, but in addition to this, taking care of essential trading matters on a daily basis is required so that the business can function legally in its home territory. After the business has been trading for a while and is established, it is prudent to review the business structure and decide whether to change the business classification. All gross income that is attributed to the business must be recorded so that profit can be calculated accurately; this would include all payments for musical services or products whether paid in cash, or other banking method. Once the business idea, plan and brand have been laid out, setting up as a legal trading entity is advisable when the business looks set to make money and trading expenses are formally logged.
