ABSTRACT

A more manageable type of log hive (German Klotzstiilper, inverted log) was made by hollowing out a section of a smaller-diameter tree trunk, usually from both ends, leaving a thin uniform wall. The hollowed log was placed on a base such as a flat stone or wooden stand. The top was protected by a cover which was often ref!lovable so that some honey comb could be harvested there (Section 26.12).
