ABSTRACT
This chapter describes how distance-learning is used by teachers to obtain qualifications in special educational needs from The University of Birmingham in England. Distance-learning, in this case, involves home study through written texts, recordings and other materials which are sent to students by post. The chapter examines those which apply directly to mature students following training courses at The University of Birmingham in the area of special needs and suggests ways in which the model may be applied to a much larger target group. At the University of Birmingham, specialist distance-learning courses have been developed for teachers of children with visual impairment, hearing impairment and for those with speech and language disorders. Training days are arranged for the tutors at the University and there are frequent opportunities for other contact with the University staff. Training to teach children with special educational needs in the United Kingdom is undertaken at post-basic qualification level.
