ABSTRACT

Around 1% of the population might identify as trans, including people who identify as non-binary. That would mean there are about 600,000 trans and non-binary people in Britain, out of a population of over 60 million. Twenty-nine percent of [trans] respondents felt that their gender identity was not validated as genuine, instead being treated as a symptom of mental ill health. From a resource for young people: ‘Trans is an umbrella term. It includes cross-dressers, transgender and transsexual people as well as anyone else who is in any way gender variant. One of the major issues around being trans is the lack of dialogue and discourse, particularly in schools. Once again, we find that ‘deviance’ from ‘norms’ gets equated with all kinds of sexualising, very weird assumptions, and fear. But for trans people living in a culture where the gender binary rules all, it is a daily battle.
