ABSTRACT

There are essentially two aspects to transference: the needed relationship and the repeated relationship. All taxomomies of transference are ultimately differing ways of conceptualizing these two dimensions. The needed relationship relates to the client's (unconscious) desire to meet historical needs, and can be viewed from a humanistic perspective as being driven by the client's striving towards health; the client's urge to obtain the needed relationship experience which will `heal' her script. The repeated relationship refers to the client's (unconscious) urge to repeat the original scenario, which is usually one that mirrors the client's early experiences with their caregivers/ parents. One perspective on this is that this repetition seeks to `do it right' at last, and gain mastery over the original traumatic scenario.
