ABSTRACT

The concept of homosociality describes social bonds between persons of the same sex. It is frequently used in studies on men and masculinities, there defined as a mechanism that explains the maintenance of hegemonic masculinity. This text explores the concept of homosociality, especially male homosocial relations, in a more multifaceted way, emphasizing the contradictory aspects of the concept. We will introduce a distinction between hierarchical and horizontal homosociality, pointing toward both how men strengthening their positions and defending hegemony and how they develop more inclusive relations that are based on emotional closeness and a non-profitable form of friendship.
