ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses key difficulties that beginning teachers often experience during some first years in the profession. Briefly, the chapter reveals that in many countries, teachers are very likely to lose their passion and want to change their profession after a few years. The first year of teaching is, in fact, the most risky and has a major impact on whether teachers wish to continue or discontinue their profession. The chapter also reveals common problems at both individual and institutional levels that beginning teachers tend to encounter when entering the profession. These include beginning teachers’ motivation, beliefs, class-readiness and classroom management, mismatches between teacher preparation programmes and classrooms in reality and disparities between skills and knowledge that universities prepare for teachers and skills, knowledge and resources that they need for the navigation of the workforce. This examination aims to provide relevant stakeholders with useful insights to both better support pre-service students in teacher preparation programmes and instruct beginning teachers to develop and utilise essential resources effectively.
