ABSTRACT

Ethical choices in Clinicians' practice are based upon the principles, values, cultures, and interests of those involved. When the domains conflict, due to their diverse nature, ethical dilemmas arise. Culture—with its beliefs, customs, and loyalties—is inseparable from ethical practice because one’s perspectives and decisions are based upon the way one lives in the world, as shaped by the society to which one belongs. The chapter presents some of the important concepts that one should be aware of when either implementing art psychotherapy in Korea or teaching art therapy to students from Korea. While the term individualism is often used to describe the culture of the US, Confucianism and collectivism characterize the culture of Korea; similar perspectives are shared by other East Asian countries such as China and Japan. The relationship between teacher and students can certainly parallel that between therapist and clients in Korea.
