ABSTRACT

Our first task in this chapter is to derive an expression for the propagation speed of transverse waves in terms of physical properties of the medium in which they move. The analysis performed for a solitary pulse generalises to repeated waves. Second, we shall obtain an expression for the amount of mechanical energy associated with the disturbance in the medium throughout one wavelength of a harmonic wave. Granted that waves are propagating disturbances, the conclusion that transverse waves are able to transfer energy is inescapable.
