ABSTRACT

The fact that some other trauma treatment approaches do not match the Fairy Tale Model's emphasis on client preparation does not mean that such preparation is not worthwhile. Therapists who do not adequately prepare their clients may still have some success with trauma resolution, probably because some of their clients have independently achieved many of the phase model's target outcomes (e.g., insight, motivation, stability, affect tolerance), despite the therapist's neglect. However, those therapists will also have an inordinate number of mishaps when they try trauma resolution with clients who do not happen to be adequately prepared. Such mishaps can easily lead to client acting out, client deterioration, or premature termination of treatment.
