ABSTRACT

Erectile dysfunction (ED) in neurologic patients (NED) is one of the consequences of disturbance/disruption of the innervation related to the function of the sexual organs. As etiologies are seldom curable, initial treatment is largely empirical and the approach stepwise: lifestyle modification, drugs, vacuum devices, intraurethral suppositories, and intracavernosal injection of vasoactive substances. Specialized Spinal cord injury rehabilitation centers around the world organize group information sessions, including a session on sexuality. It is theoretically possible to give statistical data on what incidences in the particular lesion have been described. A vacuum constriction device consists of a cylinder with a vacuum pump and a constrictive tension ring. A penile ring can also be used separately if erection can be achieved but not sustained. There are different therapeutic means to treat ED in NED. It is important to have proper sexual counseling before proposing and implementing a treatment.
