ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the question of a sustainable regional economy, with each of its environmental, social and financial dimensions. It describes urban development agenda of sites, premises, location and access. This is parallel to the greening of business' agenda of environmental management and eco-efficiency in firms and sectors. Greening the economy' is about driving the process of ecological modernization through public policy and programmes. This links to sustainable employment' and the prospects for work, workers and workplaces. The economic or financial dimension focuses on the internal viability of the regional economy, as an open sub-system within national and global economies. Transport is on the frontline of the battle of economic vs environmental goals, and at present hardly covered in environmental management. As the rate of change in business practices generally outstrips the inertia of development planning, the onus for travel management is more on the business travel demand side.
