ABSTRACT

The chapter begins with a monologue of a person who faces a crisis of trust in legal professionals and the legal system when given the option to plead to a second-degree charge of manslaughter. The chapter reviews research bearing on trust in the police (e.g., racial biases), juries (e.g., extra-legal factors), judges, lawyers (i.e., the CMTD), and the legal system (beyond the prisoner’s dilemma game). The chapter culminates in a discussion of criminal cases with children and research addressing the validity of children’s testimony in the courts.
