ABSTRACT

There lived and dwelt this peasant and his wife, and they had two sons. The army draft came and then they shaved the oldest son's forehead and sent him far far away. The other brother took up hunting and joined the army. "Who's going to feed us?" said the old woman, and she was angry at the second son and cursed him forever and ever. It happened later that both brothers were assigned to the same regiment. They lived together cordially, even well. And then the younger brother, having served a year, then a second, fell ill and died. They buried him as was appropriate. In the night the dead brother came to his living brother and said, "Brother, wake up!"
