Turmeric is found only under cultivatation. Its original home is believed to be either the South or Southeast Asian (SEA) region. In India, Ayurveda and Unani systems of medicines have used turmeric from time immemorial. Kirtikar and Basu (1984) mentioned that the Mohammedans use
Zard-Chubah
meaning stick saffron. According to Dymock et al. (1867
)
, turmeric came into use in India as a substitute for saffron and other yellow dyes, which were used by the ancient Aryans before they invaded the country.
