ABSTRACT

Centre lathes are made in a variety of sizes and are identified by the maximum size of workpiece which can be machined. The most important capacity is the largest diameter which can be rotated over the bed of the machine, and this is known as the swing. A centre lathe with a swing of 330 mm will accept this diameter of workpiece without it hitting the machine bed. It should be noted that this maximum diameter cannot be accepted over the whole length of the bed, since the cross slide is raised and will therefore reduce the swing. In the case of a 330 mm swing machine, the swing over the cross slide is 210 mm.
