ABSTRACT

Over the last Olympiad cycle (2008–2012) UK Sport’s Research and Innovation programme invested nearly £8 million in numerous science, medicine and engineering projects across Olympic and Paralympic sports. This was also supplemented by partnerships with external academic and industrial funding mechanisms to the value of approximately £15 million. UK Sport have been the facilitators between sport and experts, working in partnership with both to create a system that allows our athletes to excel by being the most prepared and best equipped on the world stage. UK Sport’s Research and Innovation programme has successfully worked in partnership with national Paralympic sports governing bodies to identify ideas that may be relevant to ensure that applied research projects have the best possible opportunity of coming to fruition. Through this financial support with funding, expertise and contacts in the field of science and technology, they clearly have delivered on projects that have had a direct benefit to Paralympics GB now and in the future.
