ABSTRACT

The two-shift system is very useful in seasonal trades where there is a largely-increased demand during certain months of the year. This chapter discusses how women are seasonally employed under the two-shift system, focuses on the employment of boys on the two-shift system, and describes lighting, heating and ventilation under the two-shift system. One of the greatest merits of the two-shift system is its prevention of overtime work. In certain of the seasonal industries the employment of women on overtime for many consecutive weeks is by no means uncommon. When firms use their two-shift Orders intermittently, and especially if they revive them after they have been left in abeyance for a long time, their administration by the factory inspectors becomes rather difficult. Probably the best method of preventing irregularities in the administration of Orders would be to issue them in two forms: Permanent Orders and Temporary Orders.
