ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the different types of returnee styles. Thinking through these styles will provide university students with an opportunity to consider what returnee style or styles apply best to them, what that suggests for how they are processing the re-entry experience, and the implications for how they view their home culture. University students will see similarities to Adler's proposed style in Pusch's work. The Free Spirit reacts to the home culture with estrangement and rejection; this type of student wants to carry on their experience of being as different or unique as they were in the host culture and their behavior back home may be seen as eccentric. The Reassimilator re-entry style is happy to be back home, may downplay the international experience to those around them, may exaggerate home cultural norms for a while in re-entry, and is cheerful with an easy intercultural re-entry home.
