ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to answer the questions that clinicians, family members, and alcohol users typically ask regarding alcohol moderation. Some include how to verify abstinence, if moderation can apply to other drugs, and success rates. The chapter deals with how some of the treatment community has responded to alcohol moderation. The majority of the people who start treatment at author practice state that their goal is to be able to keep drinking. Many times after a period of abstinence, they prefer sobriety and chose it going forward without ever having to admit that they were an “alcoholic” or were powerless over their drinking. Acknowledging that their alcohol use is causing problems validates for children what they were already sensing.
