ABSTRACT
On 9 May 2018 the House of Commons debated amendments to pending data protection legislation, of which one aimed to alter legal provisions for the allocation of costs in some civil legal proceedings and another sought to initiate a public inquiry. The press in 2012 was dominated by five companies: Rupert Murdoch’s News International; Associated Newspapers, publishers of among other papers the Daily Mail; Trinity Mirror, which publishes the Daily Mirror and also many regional and local titles; Northern and Shell, which then produced the Daily Express; and the Telegraph group. The period of cross-party consultation from early December 2012 to mid-March 2013 saw intensive lobbying by the press industry directed at all parties but most particularly the Conservatives. By the time IMPRESS was recognised in October 2016 another new Conservative Culture Secretary was in post: Karen Bradley.
