ABSTRACT

Gay parents who go above and beyond to instil heterosexual normativity in their children, or are portrayed in popular television (TV) shows as being committed to this style of parenting, as if the characters are aware of the anti-gay parenting environment that surrounds raising children. The very notion of the same-sex marriage movement brings with it attendant capitalist, mainstream and some believe conservative and/or assimilationist agendas and a narrowing of the historically radical 'gay rights movement'. While sanguinuptal families may still predominate in heteronormative publics and politics, lesbian, gay and other visibly queer families stand in contradistinction to that construction. Moral panics can take different directions including ones that are more politically and economically oriented such as economic collapse, end of capitalism, end of democracy, as well as more socially oriented ones including moral panics of drugs, music, sexuality as well as more recently that of digital media and technology.
