ABSTRACT

Equine-assisted therapy is considered part of the larger industry called “equine-assisted activities and therapies” or EAAT. This chapter clarifies the important differences between non-therapy equine-assisted activities like “therapeutic” or adaptive riding and equine-assisted learning, and the regulated forms of therapy like equine-assisted physical therapy, equine-assisted occupational therapy, equine-assisted speech therapy, and equine-assisted mental health. The chapter defines key terminology, and addresses scope of practice and consumer safety in equine-assisted therapy.
