ABSTRACT

This chapter explores reading and writing of non-fiction. It provides examples of using everyday texts. The chapter describes various genres of texts. It also provides strategies for effective interaction with texts. The chapter suggests activities in the classroom for each year group. It explains how programmes of study can be devised to incorporate a range of genres and diverse activities that will develop children's skills and engage their interest. The chapter explores some activities that could be used in the classroom with different year groups, either as part of literacy lessons or as part of cross-curricular work focused upon non-fiction texts. The English National Curriculum makes demands upon teachers and pupils that will require close scrutiny of the whole curriculum, as well as that for English. Texts from across the curriculum can be used to model approaches to non-fiction. Children need to encounter a range of different types of non-fiction texts and develop strategies for extracting information from them.
