ABSTRACT

Resistance is a phenomenon closely associated with business change, and it is often part of the business change manager's role to manage resistance or develop a resistance management plan. Humans are not naturally opposed to change. Most organisational changes do not threaten individual self-preservation to any great degree. As a business change manager, a person's aim is to shape change approach to eliminate resistance as much as possible. However, one may find himself/herself in a situation where it is simply not possible to remove all the common reasons for resistance. Vocal resistors may have one or two very clear objections, but generally they are negative about all aspects of the change, finding problems with every suggestion, activity, and communication. People may be disengaged for a number of reasons, including lack of time, unhappiness with aspects of the change, denial, cynicism that the change will happen, or because their motivations are driving them in a different direction.
