ABSTRACT

Inspired by Foucault’s idea of subjugated knowledge, our chapter expands on Orwell’s “unperson,” to examine the use of narrative and metaphor as technologies for the disappearance of certain realities in education. Playing with the notion of “uneducation” and other opposites, the essay draws attention to that which is hidden, opposed, or ignored by prevailing discourses in the politics of education. The play of opposites generates new ways of thinking about education. Although at one level it may be seen as mere linguistic play, it constitutes serious work in exploring our culture of denial and reconceptualizing our taken-for-granted educational reality.
