ABSTRACT

A new design method of urban tunneling is presented based on the control of movement of the ground or adjacent structures. Support effectiveness is defined in terms of multiplier of modulus of ground deformation for each auxiliary method of the NATM and shield tunneling. In order to control the movement of ground or adjacent structures, necessary support effectiveness is set, and with the presented design procedure, selection of the tunneling method, either the NATM or shield tunneling method, and selection of the auxiliary supports for the NATM can be made at the same time.
