ABSTRACT
This chapter explores a new way of thinking about the technologies that are employed in teaching and learning. Unlocking learning is a key to promoting innovations in teaching and learning, as well as developing meaningful, relevant skills for students. With open educational resources (OER), faculty and students are empowered to retain, re-use, revise, remix, and redistribute (5Rs) the content, which opens new opportunities for teaching, as well as learning. The learning management system (LMS) marketplace is changing, but, nonetheless, the pervasive use of LMSs in higher education has generated a monolithic mind-set about how to teach online and blended classes. By bringing annotation into the public and collaborative space of the web, annotations transform from text to a layer of rich media and open fascinating opportunities for teaching and learning, while fostering digital literacy skills.
