ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the impact of a social media campaign challenging the historical narrative of Canadian nationhood on the 150th anniversary of Confederation. Hashtags of Indigenous resistance are traced through the Twitter accounts of prominent Indigenous leaders and activists. That activity is then compared with related news coverage in the national press. The study shows social media tools in the hands of an informal but active network have the power to shape media perceptions of key issues. Moreover, the author finds that in the digital age Indigenous leaders are recontextualizing the narrative of European colonization, forcing Canada to debate the morality of its history.
