ABSTRACT

Locker (1828–1893), novelist and journalist, was editor of the Graphic. Though not as ‘elderly’ as he editorially claims to be, his nostalgia for the good old Pickwick days happily expresses an important element in the charm of Pickwick for many readers then. Reviewers who kept regretting that Dickens did not write another Pickwick were (in part) lamenting that they were no longer young. Cf. No. 152, and [John Forster], Examiner, 20 July 1861, 452.
