ABSTRACT

Perhaps by Fitzjames Stephen, who had a special fondness for The Uncommercial Traveller (Leslie Stephen, Life, 156) and for the Pickwick Papers, the Illustrated Library Edition of which was also under review here. Other passages in the review, omitted in this selection, repeat points Stephen had made elsewhere. If indeed Stephen is the author, it is pleasant to see how warm and intelligent was his regard for some aspects of Dickens. The Uncommercial Traveller essays began appearing in All the Year Round during 1860; a collection was published in 1861.
