A reprinting of Martin Chuzzlewit in the Library Edition offered an opportunity for discussing ‘what we venture to think the most brilliant and entertaining of all the works of Mr Dickens…his most characteristic work…’ The National Review was originally a Unitarian periodical; R. H. Hutton and Walter Bagehot were its joint editors.
