ABSTRACT

The situation, of course, varies a lot from place to place, but clearly, along with the global trends of an urbanising population, poverty is being urban ised, as well. Within a few decades, the number of households living in poverty in urban centres will far exceed those in rural areas: currently 50 per cent percent of the world’s poor live in cities. With urban growth as noted above, this will only get worse. The World Bank estimates that the number of urban poor will almost treble from 650 million today (1999) to 1,500 million by the year 2025 (World Bank 2000a).
