ABSTRACT

The European City/Capital Culture (ECoC) annual event, which was held for the first time in Athens in 1985, has become increasingly associated with urban regeneration strategies and debates. The chapter examines aspects of the contribution of the ECoC to symbolic, physical, economic and social regeneration. The concluding section considers a range of issues of implementation that affect the regenerative potential of the initiative.
